This memory play begins with the theatre troupe rising from the ashes to tell their story once again, and the design sought to evoke that fragility of time and form like dust blown off the pages of an old book. The walls were constructed of aged paper panels, brittle and translucent, while the thrusting stage of worn wooden planks revealed itself as the facade of an old house. Most of the action unfolded in its attic, where the troupe ultimately hid away among discarded furniture and the luggage which held the remains of their old lives. In the rain scene, real water eroded the paper walls to uncover a twelve-foot mirror, confronting the audience with a fleeting beauty once deemed too “indecent” for Broadway.
